MEASURE 96: Portion Of Oregon Lottery Proceeds To Support Veterans

MEDFORD, Ore. -- There's a measure on the November ballot that if approved by voters will allocate funds to support veteran services.

It's called Measure 96. It's a constitutional amendment that will put 1.5% of the Oregon State Lottery's net proceeds to veteran services including employment, education, housing and health care.

Some of the funding will also go to county, nonprofit and tribal veterans' services.

Currently, the state lottery revenue is distributed to public education (57%), economic development (27%), state parks and natural resources (15%), and gambling treatment (1%).

There are about 350,000 veterans living in the state of Oregon. Supporters of the measure argue that we have a duty to take care of the men and women who fight to protect our country.

"We need to bring as many resources for them to make them as successful as possible," said Veteran Mike Whitfield.

Those opposed to the measure states that using lottery to fund veteran resources leaves fewer resources for other projects.
